20/03/2012
A new affordable housing development on the Herefordshire, Shropshire border was officially opened by Councillor Olwyn Barnett, chairman of Herefordshire Council last Friday (16 March).
Commissioned by Festival Housing Group and developed by Shrewsbury based affordable housing specialist Saxonby, the Roman Close development in Leintwardine consists of 20 two and three-bedroom houses, 14 for general-needs rent and six for sale on a shared-ownership basis. It is currently the biggest single rural development in the UK.
In her address to guests and local people attending the event, Councillor Barnett said: “I am delighted that this development is in the ward I represent, has been completed on time and on budget and is subject to a local lettings policy, whereby it will not only be for the benefit of people from the surrounding area wishing to live here, but for those growing up and looking to rent or buy their first home in the future. The excellent design is an asset to the village and I am sure the Roman Close residents and home owners will make an important contribution to the life and activity of Leintwardine.”
In addition to thanking suppliers, contractors, the company’s workforce, highlighting the cooperation and support from Herefordshire Council, Leintwardine Parish Council and Festival Housing Group, Saxonby director James Wood, said: “The idea for the Roman Close development was conceived at a time of recession and a squeeze on bank lending. Bearing this in mind its success is a testament to the ambition and determination of all concerned and we are proud to be part of the UK’s largest rural development. I hope that it will fulfil the needs of the local community for many years to come.”
